Adaptive Reuse: Senior Capstone

The Design Development Phase

As I get along further in my Capstone most things get a bit more hands on. Figuring out different aspects of the spaces that will be required, and overall how much space will be needed.

Below is my process of diving deeper into the development of my design.

A Conceptual Venn Diagram

Interlocking different words to help define the overall concept of my project. With the goal of creating a cooperative environment that allows students to explore their creativity and discover more of who they are and who they want to be, providing access to many forms of art and an introduction to retail job experience. The combination of these goals leads to a transitional environment that adjusts and moves to the needs of the students.

Zones:

With many needed spaces throughout the facility, I made a list of zones, to assist in keeping track of all the necessary areas, as well as the titles of each.

My Project Design Zones:

  • Retail Gallery

  • Reception/ Checkout

  • Universal Restroom

  • Staff Room

  • Student Break Room

  • Restrooms

  • Art Supply Storage

  • Dry Zone

  • Transition Space

  • Snap Shots

    • Photography Room

  • Rage With Art

    • Art Studio

    • Viewing Room

  • Seize the Clay

    • Clay Room

  • Ceramic Storage

  • Emergency Exit

Bubble Diagrams and Adjacency Matrix:

To further my design after knowing the zones needed, bubble diagrams helped me to get an idea of the different priorities for each zone.

After laying out three different connections of spaces, I got more specific and began adding the bubble mapping concept onto the actual floorplan. This helped to give ideas of how to best layout the spaces based on the amount of space I am hoping to have for each.

Below is my Adjacency Matrix. Used to help sort out what the relation of each space is from one another. With a bit of separation from the public spaces to the private spaces, adding a sense of security and ability to the students to be more independent from society if they wish while they are inside of the building.

This inevitably led me to putting some cardboard together and visualizing the actual space, where adaptively thinking of how best to use the shell of the building without drastically changing too much. I worked on a non-scaled plan to start, getting a little deeper into coming up with a solid floor plan to work well for the space and those who would be using it.
